• Effect of Hydrogen on Creep Properties of Pure Iron

説明

The objective of this study is to characterize the effect of hydrogen on the creep properties of pure iron. Elucidation of mechanism that hydrogen affects creep deformation is essentially important to ensure the safety of evolving high-temperature hydrogen technologies. The material was JIS SUY-1 industrial pure iron, because its simple chemical composition and pure single phase may facilitate the consideration of the mechanism. Creep testing was carried out in argon and hydrogen gases at 873 K. The absolute gas pressure at which the creep tests were carried out was 0.12 MPa. The estimated hydrogen concentration in the specimen at the relevant conditions was estimated to be 0.70 mass ppm. Hydrogen accelerated the creep strain rate resulting in a significant reduction in the creep life. The fracture profile shows double cup fracture and fracture surface was dimple in both argon and hydrogen environments. There were no significant differences in the shape and size of the dimples depending on the environment. This observation indicated that hydrogen accelerated the creep deformation without changing the creep deformation mechanism. This consideration is similar to the creep of SUS304 stainless steel in hydrogen, which we previously carried out. A similar mechanism that hydrogen may increase the vacancy density, leading to enhanced dislocation climb, may be adopted.
