Abstract

This study described the expectations and outcomes of the hikikomori (prolonged social withdrawal) family meetings, and their differences. Additionally, the difference between the expectation and outcome and the support desired by the participants were preliminarily examined using text analysis. The study participants were recruited from a national network of over 50 hikikomori family meetings, and then were asked to respond to 10 items pertaining to their expectations and the outcomes obtained from family meetings. The responses of 61 fathers and 165 mothers, mean age of 65.11, were included in the analysis. The mixed model analysis showed that the highest expectation for family meetings included, “I want to learn concrete ways to relate to my child,” while the highest outcome was marked as “I want to interact with families in the same situation.” The difference between expectations and outcomes indicated that the participants tended to learn less than they had expected about relating specifically to their children; however, they tended to feel better by sharing their own experiences more than they had expected.
