説明

This study investigated the growth conditions of ruby by floating zone melt method. The ultimate goal of this research is to grow vertically long and transparent ruby single crystals. There are several conditions for growing the desired crystals. Among them, it is already known that it is most important to keep the temperature of the moltenzone as high as possible, around the melting point. In this study, the growth speed was increased in order to grow long crystals in a shorter time, and the appearance of the molten zone at that time was observed. As a result, it was found that the temperature during growth should be lowered when the growth speed was increased. However, the resulting crystals were not very transparent. This was due to the use of Al2O3+Cr2O3 raw material rods with a relative density of 90% or less. This is because low density raw material rods cannot maintain molten zone stability at high temperatures. When a raw material rod with a relative density of 95% or more was used, it was possible to grow at a higher temperature than when the relative density was 90% or less. Then, a vertically long, and transparent ruby was produced. Therefore, it was found that it is necessary to use Al2O3+Cr2O3 raw material rods with a relative density of 95% or more in order to grow the desired ruby. It is necessary to investigate the optimum growth speed for ruby single crystal using Al2O3+Cr2O3 raw material rods with a relative density of 95% or more.
