Abstract
Anchors play an important role in sailing. Although previous studies have shown differences depending on types of anchors, the reason why anchors hold on to the seabed has not been fully explored. This paper aims to investigate the dynamics of anchors. In this article, we look at quadrilateral plates as substance of anchor. We conducted three experiments on relationship between holding power and shape. These experiments follow previous researches, and enable to assess holding power. The result shows that anchor‘s width doesn’t improve holding power. However, we found anchor‘s balance related to holding power. These results are analyzed that anchor‘s center of mass affect to holding power. Based on this analyze, we cultivate a model of anchor dynamics. This model can explain results. It is concluded that the holding power of anchor depend on their shapes, especially relate to the center of mass. These findings will help to develop anchor and to sail safer.
