<p>Pyrolysis-based saccharification of pulp has attracted attention because pyrolysis of pulp yields levoglucosan, an anhydrous sugar. Alkali (Na+, K+) and alkaline earth (Mg2+, Ca2+) metal cations, present as cation-exchangeable salts of carboxyl groups in pulp, have a significant effect on the pyrolysis of cellulose in pulp. In this study, pulp exchanged with each metal cation was analyzed by thermogravimetry-mass spectrometry (TG-MS) to investigate the mechanism of their effects. The results obtained provide valuable insights for the production of levoglucosan by pulp pyrolysis.</p>
