The purpose of this study was to investigate characteristics of walking with training tube (TW) from comparing the muscle activity patterns and kinematic observation during Nordic walking (NW) and TW. Three Nordic walkers in a skilled and two unskilled participated in this study as the subject. All experiments were conducted on a treadmill and compared both walking styles( TW and NW) at 80 m/min.Electromyogram (EMG) readings were recorded from triceps brachii (TB), deltoid (DM) and vastus lateralis (VL). It was observed that the range of motion of the shoulders and the elbow extension angle increased in the skilled subject during both walking. And EMG patterns for the skilled during NW and TW were more similar than unskilled subjects. It is indicated the possibility that TW could substitute NW.However, it was observed that the gait phase in which the maximum muscle discharge was observed differed between both walking in the skilled. It is suggested that the need to develop a device that can simulate the rotational motion of arm swing. In addition, it was shown that skill for NW is necessary to perform TW from unskilled results.
