Abstract

Spread of the new coronavirus infection has led to significant changes in practical training in nursing education, and many healthcare universities have switched to online and on-campus exercises to address this issue. At A University, an exercise for learning the nursing process was conducted by interviewing a cancer survivor using an online system as a complementary program to the field practice in adult nursing. The present study aimed to clarify student learning characteristics in this exercise. We used text mining to analyze the contents of the responses in the reaction papers from 49 of the 54 students who took the practical training; results showed that students gained valuable opportunities to engage with the cancer survivor, devise communication methods, reaffirm the importance of engaging with the sick, and use the experience in future practical training. In conclusion, the findings of this study indicated that this practical exercise complemented the learning of the nursing process conducted in the hospital wards and helped to broaden the range of training formats.
