Abstract

Japanese interior design, especially after World War II, was led by women. These women created interiors using handicrafts as a hobby for their homes. Later, however, in the 1990s, interior handicrafts by women declined, ushering in an era when both men and women enjoyed interior design. While the trend to consume interior products like trendy fashion is growing, DIY interior design has also become popular amid the rise of alternative cultures that dislike mass production. In this study, I conducted a survey of questionnaires, interviews, and journals (ELLE DECOR) to determine the current state of DIY interior design practice and its foundational ideology. As a result, the magazine survey confirmed a declining trend in interior handicrafts. Although the practice of DIY has become more widespread across genders, some gender roles still remain, and it was found that women in particular are more interested in interior design and are doing DIY to achieve their ideal interiors. However, it is also clear that a new way of thinking is spreading among both men and women, with an increasing number of people criticizing mass production and mass consumption and practicing DIY using recycled wood and other old materials.
