Abstract

Conversations at the first meeting is an important element in building a relationship. In interpersonal communication situations, humor is known to relieve tension, create empathy, and deepen relationships. Furthermore, humor expression can be classified into three types: aggressive humor expression, self-deprecating humor expression, and playful humor expression. Among them, this paper focuses on self-deprecating humor expressions. We will examine the effects of self-deprecating humor expression on the amount of laughter, the amount of conversation, and the rate of conversation in first-time communication in various situations, and discuss its mechanisms and effects.
