Abstract

This study aims to clarify the type of mental transformation that mothers of children with congenital heart disease undergo, through their reflections on their parenting practices during their children’s infancy. To this end, semi-structured interviews were conducted with seven mothers of children with congenital heart disease, and their narratives were analyzed using the Modified Grounded Theory Approach (hereinafter referred to as M-GTA). The results suggested that “childcare anxiety caused by becoming a mother of a sick child” is transformed into “maternal development through childcare” as a result of “encouragement by family, friends, and other mothers met at the hospital ward” and “encouragement by the medical and hospital ward staff.” We hope that these results will facilitate further improvement of childcare support in hospital wards in the future.
