Modern organizations increasingly need followers and leaders to work beyond their positions. However, there is limited research to examine common behavioral characteristics are recognized among leaders and followers in various positions. Therefore, this study investigates whether common behavioral characteristics are required for expected leadership (servant leadership) and followership. We divided the content of scales from a servant leadership and followership study into the position of the person acting (superior and subordinate) and behavior itself. These positions were then manipulated, and evaluation scales with only different evaluation targets were prepared. However, the content was a combination of leadership and followership behavioral characteristics. Based on data from 258 participants, we conducted an exploratory factor analysis using scales on the leader and follower sides and examined their effects on performance. The results revealed identical factors for the three evaluation items related to “proactivity,” “obedience,” and “integrity” in both leadership and follower roles. Owing to contextual differences, the findings suggest that leaders and followers are expected to perform similar roles, despite being studied separately.
