This study investigated some of the psychological changes observed in a Japanese university student before and after participating in an eTandem project. In the eTandem, students from two universities in Japan and in Australia met online for language exchange. This paper focuses on one of the Japanese students in the eTandem who considers herself poor at English. It discusses some of the changes she went through and the roles that Zoom and Padlet, the applications adopted for the project, played out in such changes. The eTandem was run for a period of one month, within which a total of four language exchanges was held for 20 minutes each time. In a language exchange, students carried out a conversation using Japanese in the first 10 minutes and using English in the other 10 minutes. This paper reports how a one-on-one language exchange the student took part in functioned as an opportunity for her to face the challenges of maintaining a conversation with a language partner. We found that screen-sharing and chat functions that ICT offers were employed by the pair effectively so that they could understand each other better, and consequently, helped reduce the Japanese student's unwillingness to speak English.
