  • The Formation of the Body Dismantling, Restoration, Non-damage Motif of Monks in the Six Dynasties : Using "Signs from the Unseen Realm" and "Biographies of Eminent Monks"

抄録

This paper explores the records of monks during the Six Dynasties in China, by focusing on the formation of three motifs that consist of Body Dismantling, Restoration, and Non-damage. By analyzing "Signs from the Unseen Realm" and "Biographies of Eminent Monks", the common feature is that selfinflicted Body Dismantling is concentrated on Self-immolation, and Body Restoration emphasizes the Buddhist miracle. On the other hand, passively endured Body Dismantling and Restoration is linked to karmic retribution. Furthermore, the records that the monks` body kept undamaged and the tongue or finger remained intact after the death of monks highlight the efficacy of Buddhist beliefs. About the tales of the hell, "Signs from the Unseen Realm" contains the pattern that the monks passively suffered from Body Dismantling and Restoration, used as a critique against the violations of precepts. However, "Biographies of Eminent Monks" focuses on the uniqueness of the monks in the present world. In summary, two books show the complex situation when Buddhism integrating into Chinese social beliefs.
