Abstract

Since the launch of the initial teacher training system in 1989, education for "novice teachers" has been provided in Japan. This paper aims to clarify how novice teachers themselves perceive the situation in which supervising teachers directly instruct novice teachers in their own classrooms during the training program. This paper reveals that in teaching situations where the supervising teachers, the novice teachers, and the students are all present, the novice teachers are in a dual role of being "the teacher" of the class and "the trainee" of the supervising teachers, and that they are in a unique dilemma situation and ambivalent about their position in such situations. The results of the study showed that the students were ambivalently positioned in such a situation.
