Abstract

Objective: The purpose of this study was to determine the relationship between resting quadriceps elasticity measured using shear wave elastography and explosive performance.

Methods: Shear modulus was measured at 90˚ of the hip joint flexion at 0˚, 90˚, and 120˚ of knee joint flexion for the Rectus Femoris (RF), Vastus Medialis (VM), and Vastus Lateralis (VL). We measured rate of torque development during maximal isometric knee extension, squat jump height, rebound jump height, and rebound jump index as indices of exercise performance.

Results: At 0˚ knee joint, a positive correlation was found between the RF and the rate of torque development. At 90˚ knee joint, a positive correlation was found between the RF and the rebound jump index. At 120˚ knee joint, the VM and VL were positively correlated with rate of torque development. A positive correlation was also observed between VM and the rebound jump index.

Conclusion: High resting elasticity of RF in the shortened and mildly extended position and of VM and VL in the extended position may contribute to explosive performance.
