Abstract

The teacher education in postwar Japan has been conducted under the two major principles of “teacher education at universities” and “open system of teacher license issuance”, but the situation surrounding teacher education has been facing various problems and needs to be reformed as we enter the 2020s. Due to the coincidence of the mass retirement of teachers from the baby boom generation and the mass hiring of new teachers, there are issues such as the decline in the quality of teachers due to the low pass rate of the teacher recruitment examination, the difficulty of school management due to the shortage of teachers, and so on. The Central Council for Education submitted a report on “The Way of Teacher Education, Recruitment, and Training for the Japanese School Education in the Reiwa Era” on December 19, 2023. This paper examines the way of teacher education at private universities from the perspective of this report.
