Abstract
Magnetic tape is increasingly recognized as an ideal storage media for data backup and archive owing to its high capacity, low cost, low energy consumption and long-term stability. In 2020, we succeeded to demonstrate the world's record areal recording density of 317Gb/in2 as coated recording media by the combination with advanced drive technologies. In this paper we describe key technologies to achieve the areal density: fine Strontium-ferrite particles, particle orientation control and surface profile design.
