The Internet has become an indispensable tool in our daily lives. In the past, people used personal computers to access the Internet, but in recent years, this has shifted to smartphones. It is said that smartphone use affects the exercise habits and mental health of university students. Previous studies have examined smartphone use subjectively, and thus were unable to measure “casual use,” in which people touch their smartphones without a sense of purpose, pointing out the need for more detailed studies (Seino et al., 2021). In this study, we focused on screen time, a function installed in the iPhone developed by Apple, and aimed to show the relationship between exercise habits and the status of application use and time spent using each application. The results of this study showed no difference between exercise habits and mental health by app category. In addition, we found that time of use on the iPhone data was not associated with exercise habits and mental health. The results suggest that smartphone usage and duration of use may not be a direct factor in exercise habits and mental health.
