城西大学の建学の精神「学問による人間形成」の今日的意味を考える手がかりを得るために，城西大学の創立母体であった城西学園の教育内容および，城西学園の前身として位置付けられる城西実務学校の教育内容との間の連続性について検討した。そこでは，「新教育」の精神が城西実務学校創立者の中島久万吉，成蹊実務学校の創立者であり城西実務学校学監であった中村春二，城西学園創設者の野口援太郎を結びつけていたこと，そしてそれは，城西実務学校から城西学園に受け継がれたことを明らかにした。For a later study on the founding spirit of Josai University named “Character Formation through Learning”, I examined the perspectives of education of Kumakichi Nakajima, Haruji Nakamura, and Entaro Noguchi, and also examined the educational content of Josai Practical School and Josai Gakuen. Josai Practical School was the founding body of Josai Gakuen, which in turn was the founding body of Josai University. Kumakichi Nakajima was the founder of Josai Practical School, while Haruji Nakamura was the founder of Seikei Practical School and the first academic affairs supervisor of Josai Practical School. My research clarified that the educational perspectives of these three persons were linked by the idea of “New Education: the Japanese Progressive Education Movement in the Taisho Era”.
