説明

This study presents Japanese translations of two art theories published by Diderot in Correspondance littéraire. The first translation concerns Diderot’s summary of Irish critic Daniel Webb’s theory of art, published in the issue of January 15, 1763. The second rendition represents a discussion on the sculptor Bouchardon, published in two parts in the March 1 and 15 issues of 1763. Diderot’s expositions on art theories in Correspondance littéraire are famous for its critiques of Salon. However, the two aforementioned essays are excluded from his Salon reviews and are hence often overlooked. Nevertheless, these texts are considered important because they discuss certain issues related to Diderot’s theory of art in general; for instance, ancient art or the materiality of works of art. These essays also presage Essay on Painting (1765), Diderot’s representative work on art theory.
