Abstract
Despite recent efforts to provide education to children in designated hospitals for childhood cancer, their school education in Japan has not been well established, and a full-fledged report on such education is lacking. The current state of education for hospitalized children, especially the partnership between medical care and education, requires further investigation and clarification. Therefore, this study explored the significance of special needs education and its impact on the partnership between medical care and school education. Fieldwork results from a special needs school in a children’s hospital revealed the following seven key benefits: “ensuring personalized learning opportunities,” “fostering positivity, independence, and sociality,” “understanding distress and psychological support,” “developing positive attitudes and motivation to live with illness,” “improving therapeutic outcomes,” “nurturing post-traumatic growth,” and “supporting families of hospitalized children.” The findings emphasize the importance of partnership between hospital care team members and schoolteachers for children's medical care, QOL, and their future.
