Abstract

In this paper, we devise several screening session selection screens for a movie theater ticket reservation system that applies nudges in order to achieve temporal crowd smoothing without relying on economic incentives. Here, we have devised three types of screening selection screens that apply nudges: (i) to make the screening with fewer people stand out, (ii) to suggest a screening with fewer people to those who selected a screening with more people, and (iii) to present a social norm. The results of the verification experiments using the stand-alone evaluation and the one-pair comparison method indicate that the screening selection screen with nudges may be more effective than the screening selection screen in existing movie theater ticket reservation systems in promoting the temporal crowd smoothing. In addition, comparison within social norm nudges confirms that the effect of social norms is strengthened by motivational statements accompanying the rationale, that numerical expressions of roughly 70%or more are more effective than verbal expressions for crowd smoothing, and that different motivational statements are also effective in encouraging temporal crowd smoothing. Consequently, we clarify the feasibility of temporal crowd smoothing in a ticket reservation system without relying on economic incentives.
