Abstract

Inability to maintain an upright sitting posture is a risk factor for low back pain. The purpose of this research is to verify that the hip flexor has potential of maintaining in an upright sitting posture with physiological spinal curve. The cross-sectional area (CSA) of the iliacus, one of the two major hip flexors, was measured using ultrasound tomography, and was compared between in an upright sitting posture and in a sitting posture with the trunk to lean forward by flexing the hip joints, as a control. The study sample included 10 healthy men (mean age 23.8±6.5 years). Ultrasound tomography was capable of identifying the iliacus, and the CSA of the iliacus was significantly greater by 33.1±11.3% in an upright sitting posture, compared with that in a control sitting posture. Despite that both ends of the muscle were not in closer proximity than a control posture, the greater CSA in an upright sitting posture may indirectly suggest that there was activity of the iliacus in the maintenance of this posture.
