Abstract
This study examines Buddhist views of humanity in contemporary Japanese subcultures, using the comic “Machida-kun no Sekai (Mr. Machida’s World),” a commercial film “Naa-chan Series,” and television drama “Kahogo no Kahoko (Overprotective Kahoko).” The analysis demonstrates the maitrī (compassion) of Bhuddhism as a common trait between Hajime Machida in “Machida-kun no Sekai” and Naa-chan who is the protagonist of the “Naa-chan Series.” In addition, Kahoko’s way of life in “Kahogo no Kahoko” resembles a Bodhisattva such as Sadāparibhūta in The Lotus Sūtra.
