Description

Ainan Town, Ehime Prefecture, is one of the most depopulated municipalities in Japan. In 2023, the Fisheries Agency of Japan certified 12 districts nationwide, including Ainan, as “UMIGYO Model Districts.” UMIGYO is a policy promoted by the Japanese government to revitalize coastal regions by developing attractive local resources of the coastal environment and fishing villages. This article summarizes the previous attempts at fisheries promotion in Ainan and describes the current situation of the UMIGYO project. For UMIGYO to be successful, it is essential to develop a system that involves various stakeholders and to promote a common awareness of local sustainability.
