<p>This study focused on the relation between cognition of ibasho and spatial experiences of visits and activities prior to old age among the elderly in two suburban residential areas of Fujisawa City with different living environments. The results revealed that increased spatial experiences of visits and activities promotes increased cognition of ibasho in the residential neighborhood. The effects of spatial experiences on the cognition of ibasho in the residential were then categorized into three patterns: "Continued social interaction", "Persistence of physical elements" and "Habituation of personal visits". In addition, analyzing the correspondence between these three patterns and ibasho, this study proposes five guidelines for the formation of a residential environment that promotes the cognition of ibasho in the residential neighborhood.</p>
