Description

When recording information on digital devices, it is known that memories related to the recorded information fade, while memories of information encountered immediately after recording tend to be more easily retained. The suppression and facilitation of human memory due to the recording of information on such digital devices are explained by the operation of cognitive functions known as cognitive offloading. This study considers the act of taking photos with smartphones during a city tour as recording information onto digital devices. Firstly, it hypothesized that taking photos of streetscapes suppresses memory of the photographed streetscape. Secondly, it hypothesized that taking photos of streetscapes enhances memory of surrounding streetscapes not photographed. These hypotheses were tested by indoor experiments, which supported both hypotheses.
