Description

Speakers of languages with stress accent have difficulties perceiving and producing Japanese pitch accents. To help learners who struggle with pitch, we decided to add accent information in a Japanese-Slovene dictionary we are revising, as we think that visual clues to accent patterns may help them produce the correct accent. We used accent data from the Japanese Education Vocabulary list, but as numbers or symbols are arguably difficult for learners to understand, we also transcribed all headwords in Roman letters and prepared multiple variants of accent marking, using small and capital letters, superscript, colour coding and other forms. We describe this process and the feedback of some learners on a pilot version of the dictionary.
