Description

Since launching SEIQoL-DW Japanese version, there were several reports of its QOL on patients and families with severe neurodegenerative disorders. But we could find few reports on self-limiting disorders and especially no case-report with acute disseminated encephalomyelitis (ADEM). Recently, we had a chance to support preparing the discharge of the ADEM patient in his 70s with relatively good outcome. We checked the patients and his wifes (in her 70s) QOL by SEIQoL-DW and apprehensions by 20 items from STAI Japanese version, along with his numbness by visual analogue scale (VAS) before and after the discharge. The indices of SEIQoL-DW were patients: 88.8 (before) and 80.0 (after the discharge), wifes 91.2 (before) and 74.2 (after the discharge). The numbness by VAS was worsened as 42 (before) and 80 (after the discharge). STAIs items showed some discrepancies between the patient and his wife, which suggested worse apprehensions. There seemed to be the response shift on SEIQoL-DW between before and after the discharge. Continuous and comprehensive support seemed to be necessary for better QOL of patients and families with self-limiting neurological diseases, even though they showed relatively good QOL indices before the discharge.
