Description

The birth review has been practiced as midwifery care for postpartum women to facilitate achieving maternal role attainment in Japan. Postpartum women were encouraged to talk about their childbirth experiences so that they eliminate negative emotions related their childbirth and accept their own childbirth experiences in the review. However, Cochrane review reported that reviewing the childbirth experience had a negative impact on the mental health, in case of women who had traumatic experiences of her childbirth. Thus, a birth review was reconsidered in terms of achieving maternal role attainment and improving mental health in this paper. The practice of the birth review was not clear enough, suggesting that the methodology may differ depending on the medical facilities. In addition, the studies related effects of the birth review were scarce in Japan. Thus, it is necessary to reveal the effects and harms of the methodology based on objective evidence. Recently, continuous support from pregnancy to child-rearing period has been developed, due to serious problems of women’s mental health, such as depression and child-rearing anxiety. Therefore, considering the future practice of the birth review, it is necessary to regard the birth review as a part of continuous nursing and childcare support in collaboration with multiple occupations.
