Description

We focus on the characteristics of a solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC) in a pressurized gas atmosphere for the optimal design of SOFC stacks and a hybrid electric generation system with gas turbines (jet engines) for propulsion of electric aircraft. In this study, we electrochemically characterize the oxygen electrode, focusing on the dependency of the exchange current density on the oxygen partial pressure. The exchange current density is an electrochemical kinetic parameter required for numerical modeling, which is useful to optimize cell/stack designs and operation conditions. Electrolyte-supported (8 mol% yttria-stabilized zirconia: 8YSZ) symmetrical cells with (La0.8Sr0.2)MnO3 (LSM)-8YSZ and (La0.6Sr0.4)Co0.2Fe0.8O3-δ (LSCF) electrodes were used to measure single electrode reaction resistances by electrochemical impedance spectroscopy under various oxygen partial pressures, so that the dependency of the exchange current density is derived.
