  • Attempts to Visualize Potential Memories in East Asia’s Postwar History: Focusing on Novels by Fukasawa Kai

説明

This article examines the latent memories of people in the postwar history of East Asia portrayed in Zainichi Korean literature. Until now, Zainichi Korean literature has primarily been interpreted as a means of tracing the scars of colonial rule and the memories of the division between North and South Korea. However, this study aims to interpret it as a medium for forging connections with others. The specific works analyzed here are “Parcha Taryong” (1998) and “Paranse” (2008), novels by Fukasawa Kai, both centered around the theme of the Repatriation Project of Zainichi Koreans to North Korea. These works explore the memories of women who endured numerous hardships and conflicts while living in the liminal space between Japan and the Korean Peninsula. By interpreting these memories as narratives of empathy and mutual understanding, this article seeks to understand them as a practice that bridges the heavy history of the past with the present and future. Reading these works fosters empathy for the suffering and experiences of others, helping us understand their positions and emotions. In doing so, it creates the possibility for genuine dialogue. This is the goal that Fukasawa Kai sought to achieve through literature.
