Description

Purpose:To identify the information needs of young adult patients with cancer from previous studies and obtain suggestions for nursing practice to resolve these needs. Methods:Thirteen articles retrieved from Ichushi Web using the queries “cancer” and “information needs” as well as twelve studies retrieved from PubMed using the queries “cancer,” “information needs,”“young adult,” and “daily life” published within the past 5 years were selected as study targets and qualitatively analyzed. Results:The subjects were patients in 20 cases and only family members in 5 cases. It was suggested that young adult patients with cancer had needs related to fertility, work, and body image. On the other hand, family members had needs related to information about treatment and alleviating patient suffering. Young adult patients with cancer use the Internet to take action to resolve their needs. Discussion:Information must be provided according to the understanding levels of the patient/family in order for patients to continue treatment. Additionally, young adults have information needs closely related to their life cycle, such as fertility and work; therefore, they need support from other professions to resolve their information needs.
