Description

Harpellales species inhabit the digestive tracts of aquatic insects. Trichozygospora chironomidarum was found in the larval hindgut of Orthocladius sp. (Chironomidae); this is the first record of this fungal genus in Japan. Host larvae were collected from algae-covered rock surfaces in a stream on Mt. Tsukuba, Ibaraki Prefecture. This is the 21st Harpellales species reported from Japan and the eighth recorded on Mt. Tsukuba. As a Harpellales host, larvae of the genus Orthocladius sp. (Chironomidae) are recorded in Japan for the first time.
