Abstract

It is significant to specify spatial landscape characteristic in landscape planning and management. Therefore, the paper aims to develop a specification method focusing on the positioning transition of a certain area in urban spatial structure. With the using of topographic maps, the method is as follows. Firstly, based on the combination of historical land use and Integration Value, which is a spatial depth parameter derived from the Space Syntax analysis for road networks, urban spatial depth maps are created. Next, with the analysis of changed/unchanged urban spatial depth referring to Historic Landscape Characterisation method, the landscape characteristics of each area can be presented on the map. As a case study, the method was applied to the central area of Sakura City, Chiba Prefecture, which originates from a castle town in Edo era and had experienced the rapid post-war urbanization. The comparison of the analysis result and actual townscapes obtained from field survey suggested the effectiveness of the method.
