Abstract

“Shishigaki” are structures used in the past in rural areas of Japan to protect fields from damage by animals. Although many kinds of shishigaki were built, almost all of them have fallen into disrepair in mountain areas. To examine shishigaki as a regional resource for community renovation, we look at five shishigaki and discuss their multiplicity from the viewpoint of their structural characteristics and functions. Through field works and a search of the literature, it was found that shishigaki are not only walls to protect areas from animals but also to prevent landslides, to mark the boundary of lands, to maintain work spaces and to catch animals that would damage fields. We point out that shishigaki can be used to evaluate unique regional characters, which is an important point to utilize in community renovation.
