Description

This study is a basic research for the prevention of pressure ulcer by taking into account the differences in the body type of the elderly and comparing the blood flow of the sacral region, groin area, and buttocks according to the head elevation angles of obese elderly people. This study aims to examine the appropriate head elevation angle to prevent pressure ulcers in obese elderly people. The subjects were 14 obese elderly people. Blood flow was measured at a head elevation angle of 20°, 25°, and 30° in 4 locations : the sacral region, cleft region, and left and right buttocks.

At a head elevation angle of 20°, stasis was observed due to compression ; however, there was no decrease in blood flow, and no factors leading to pressure ulcer development were detected at any of the 4 locations. At a head elevation angle of 25°, a decrease in blood flow was observed at all locations except the left buttock 20 min after stasis due to compression. At a head elevation angle of 30°, the degree of stasis was particularly large in the left and right buttocks, and a subsequent decrease in blood flow than that in the other angles was also observed. From these findings, adopting a general 30° head elevation angle may increase the load on the buttocks in obese elderly people.
