Abstract

Drifting fishing boats were flown out into the North Pacific Ocean by the tsunami of the Great East Japan Earthquake in March 2011. Some of them have been found around the Ryukyu Islands. In this study, to clarify the moving paths of small fishing boats to the Ryukyu Islands, we investigated the migration path from the Emperor Seamount Chain in the central North Pacific Ocean to the Ryukyu Islands using a drifting buoy that is strongly affected by leeway. The drifting buoy moved southward away from the Corahan Seamount included in the Emperor Seamount Chain and moved westward with large meandering from about 26°N. After that, the drifting buoy moved westward with little meandering from about 167°E and 25°N. Although the movement of drifting buoy was strongly affected by leeway overall, it was strongly affected by seamounts locally. The travel time and final location of the drifting buoy in this study might be applicable to those in the past cases.
