Abstract

In order to understand the tree phenology in the city, this study examined the temporal and spatial characteristics of the flowering and full-blooming days of 169 Cerasus x yedoensis ‘Somei-yoshino’ at 58 locations within a radius of about 2 km in the center of Tokyo for two years. This study showed that flowering and full-blooming of Cerasus x yedoensis ‘Somei-yoshino’ exhibit stable dynamics over time, and that phenological differences of more than 10 days can occur even within a 2 km radius. The air temperature distribution, ascertained by moving observations each day and night, did not necessarily explain the early and late flowering or full-blooming days. However, the sites of large temperature variance were characterized by the vicinity of wide roads or the boundary between large green spaces and urban areas. No clear relationship between radiation and phenology was identified.
