Description

Objective : To determine factors affecting career continuation after delivery among pregnant nurses by using a questionnaire survey.

Method : Letters inviting participation in the research and an inquiry about the number of pregnant nurses were sent to nursing directors in all the hospitals of prefectures where the employment rates of married 22- to 44-year-old women were lower than the national average of 53.5%.

Results : Questionnaires were sent to 736 nurses at 156 hospitals, and 481 responses (65.4%) were received. Of these, 460 nurses were scheduled to continue working after delivery, and 17 were not. A logistic regression analysis found that the continuation rates were 1.224 times higher in nurses as their age increased by 1 year, 4.794 times higher for nurses who received special attention from the family during pregnancy than those who did not, 5.698 times higher for nurses who received childcare support from the family than those who did not, 0.166 higher for nurses who were the main breadwinners, and 7.012 times higher for nurses who were qualified midwives in addition to being trained nurses.

Discussion : Personal factors and work condition strongly affect the work continuation rate after delivery among pregnant nurses. To increase this percentage, it is necessary to pay special attention to those who receive no support during pregnancy and no childcare support from their families after delivery.
