Abstract

Temporal and spatial distributions of longshore sediment are estimated from shoreline data set which is composed from 45 satellite images at the southern Kashimanada Coast, Ibaraki, Japan, a 16-km long sandy beach. Length of the shoreline data set is approximately 10 years, and the average time interval is approximately 85 days, and spatial resolution is 10 m. First, Empirical Orthogonal Function analysis was applied to separate the shoreline variations into two major components: cross-shore sediment originated and longshore sediment originated components. Then, the equation of sediment conservation, or the model equation of One Line Model, which connects temporal shoreline variation and spatial gradient of total longshore sediment flux. Shoreline variations which is assumed originated from longshore sediment is integrated along the shore and temporal and spatial variation of total longshore sediment flux was estimaed. Result of the estimation is validated with result of wave reanalyses computation.
