Abstract

Our pilot survey of university and junior college students in Tokushima Bunri University revealed that their awareness about ethical consumption was 42%, ecology was 90%, and local production for local consumption was 87%. This motivated us to promote ethical consumption in Tokushima prefecture as a contribution to society and community. The activity was conducted in November 2017 with 28 high school students, in cooperation with 17 junior college students majoring in food sciences and dietetics. The study aimed to clarify the educational effect of participating in the promotion activity. All the attendants of the junior college students were given a self-administered questionnaire consisting of 12 factors to determine whether any change was observed in their ability to develop the basics as a contributing member of society. The change in the evaluation scores of each factor was examined and free descriptions were suitably categorized. Analysis revealed that communication skills were statistically higher at 3.5 points after the ethical promotion activity than before at 2.9 points. The results suggest that the ethical promotion activity is an educationally available tool for junior college students to develop the basics as a contributing member of society.
