Description

The aim of this study was to develop a new project to promote young children's creative musical expressions in a kindergarten. There were three parts to this project. In the first activity, 5-year old children were asked to go to nearby woods to listen to natural sounds, then after returning to their class, they used onomatopoeia to reproduce the sounds they heard in the woods. For the second activity, the children visualized their onomatopoeia in pictures a week later. The third activity took place five months later. The children were asked to look again at the pictures they had drawn in the second activity. They then formed group of 4 or 5 children and performed improvisatory ensembles. The results of the project showed that onomatopoeia were elicited through their visual and auditory impressions in the woods and the children were able to express the sounds as characters and/or figures by use of the pictures. The third activity shows that young children are able to participate in musical ensembles using onomatopoeia and create spontaneous musical elements by employing ostinato, rhythm patterns and dynamics of voice.
