Al4C3 powder was synthesized by heating a powder mixture consisting of Al:C=4:3 (molar ratio) heated in Ar at 1400℃ for 2h. When an equimolar powder mixture compact consisting of Al4C3 and SiC was heated at 1700℃ for 2h in vacuum, a monophase of Al4SiC4 was formed. A fine powder of Al4SiC4 after milling with alumina balls for 24h was sintered using the PECS (Pulse Electric Current Sintering) technique. Upon heating at above 1750℃, the relative density of the sintered samples surpassed 98%. In the case of heating at 1750℃ for 5 min and applying a pressure of 60 MPa, the fracture strength, Vickers hardness, and fracture toughness of the sample were 470 MPa, 16 GPa, and 2.8 MPa・m1/2, respectively. In contrast, upon heating at 1850℃, the main crystal phase of the sample changed to Al4Si2C5. The fracture strength, Vickers hardness, and fracture toughness of the dense Al4Si2C5 body were 430 MPa, 14 GPa, and 2.9 MPa・m1/2, respectively. Thus, the mechanical properties were comparable to those of the dense Al4SiC4 body.
