Abstract

In the special exhibition "Space and Universe 2000", we produced the exhibition "The Powers of Ten" through which visitors can experience the extent of the universe. "The Powers of Ten" is a Computer Graphic system that shows the place where we are now until the edge of the universe. The system is very effective for education purposes but very complex to build. In fact, there were no further trials a similar system since the short movie produced in 1977 in the USA. At that time, they had no choice but to animate imaginary pictures in most parts of the movie. This time, we produced a system based on the latest scientific data and knowledge of the universe acquired after that. We use 3-dimentional computer graphics to support scientific visualization. Furthermore the system provides a new method of the exhibition that join together panel exhibition and movie. Therefore we got good educational result. In this study, we discuss the development of "The Power of Ten" system specially considering its educational purposes, and its validness and meaning through the special exhibition in our science museum.
