Description
This paper is a critical review of Alexander Vovin's A Reference Grammar of Classical Japanese prose in the Heian period. This book is featured by a synthesis between traditional Japanese linguistic(=kokugogaku) description and traditional Western linguistic description, and also by the additional linguistic information: its writing system & phonology, its lexicon such as Japanese cognates with Korean and Altaic, and its loanwords. There seem to be some problems on new categorization of traditionally- fixed elements in kokugogaku such as particles, suffixes & prefixes. Some explanations on newly introduced words and additional functions of some case particles are needed to understand his classical Japanese grammar Although these minor problems are detected, I value his book as one of the most important linguistic works on classical Japanese grammar in not only the Western but also Eastern academic world of Japanese linguistics.
