Abstract

Traditional formal events in Korea are divided into annual events and rites of passage. These annual events and rites of passageprovide vitality and rest for recovery in people's lives. Also, in the processes of formal events such as annual events and rites of passage,special seasonal cooking is prepared as feasts, and with foods of the four seasons, there are prayers for a good harvest, family blessings,rid evil, etc., or offerings are presented as symbols of ancestor worship. In addition, offerings of formal foods play an intermediary role inthe relationship between spirits and gods with people. According to Confucian tradition, Korea's ancestor worship events are typical formal events expressing Confucian teachings in actions.By holding ancestor worship events, people can experience its teachings, and it also leads to social regard. Thus for Koreans, holdingancestor worship events is an important lifestyle norm. The historical process and characteristics of Korean culture are especially reflected in ritual offerings, with offerings of meat and fishdishes, rice cakes and fruit. Thus through ritual offerings, people can gain chances to obtain good quality animal proteins which are rarelyeaten as everyday foods, especially meat and fish dishes.
