Abstract

We assayed the anti-inflammatory effect of a 30% ethanol extract of Chinese quince (Chaenomeles sinensis) in vitro to show that it has an inhibitory effect on the histamine release from rat mast cells induced by compound 48/80, and on activation of hyaluronidase. Chromatographic separation of the extract gave five phenolic compounds and higher molecular weight polyphenols. Some of these compounds showed a potent inhibitory effect on the histamine release and on the hyaluronidase. The structure of the most active compound, a high molecular weight polyphenol, was analyzed by ^<13>C-NMR, thiol degradation reaction, and gel permeation chromatography (GPC) of its acetylated derivative.
