Abstract

Nitrogen ion implantation was performed on media with a resist mask to fabricate patterned media. Signal of the preamble pattern was analyzed to evaluate quality of the fabricated pattern. The auto correlation signal to noise ratio and the jitter were closely related to the saturation magnetization of the ion-implanted area. Larger reduction of the saturation magnetization at the ion-implanted area is important for obtaining higher signal quality. Larger remained magnetization of the ion-implanted area probably caused larger roughness of the pattern transition and worse patter quality. The fabricated discrete track showed better squeeze performance on 747 curves than continuous magnetic film, which indicates that the fabricated patterns were successfully isolated.
