Description

Questionnaires were given to a group of 167 instructors from institutions ou nursing education and a group of 171 chiefs of nursing at hospitals that accept new graduates in Hokkaido. The questionnaires concerned the level of technical nursing skills that can be expected of a nursing student at graduation time. For many of the items in the questinnaire, instructors gave higher evaluations than nursing heads at hospitals concerning the level of technical achievement at graduation time. That tendency was particularly apparent for items inovolving nutrition, hygine, bed making, moving the patient in bed and positioning, safety, and physical assessment. The category where nursing chiefs gave higher evaluations concerned injections.Factor analysis was conducted for 30 items that had particularly low evaluations. As a result, five factors for instructors, and six factors for chiefs were identified. Instructors' evaluations of technical items followed textbook categories. Nursing chiefs, on the other hand, performed evaluations that made distinctions between highly technical skills and those skills that can be transferred to people not of the nursing specialty. It is necessary to consider the evaluations of nursing chiefs and examine ways to design opportunities for nursing students to gain more effective technical experience.
